Alot to share…*spoiler alert!*

I’ve been knitting and busy dealin’ with life’s unexpected events, but I won’t trouble you with that! I have much to share and I’ll have to break it down over a few posts. First, this post has spoilers, so if any of my “spoilee’s” are reading, be prepared to be spoiled before you get your swappy package!

First, I’ll start with a project I started Saturday (yesterday), it is the “Bulky Shrug” from Knitting Pure and Simple. I’ve had this pattern for awhile, I was just waiting for the right “super bulky” yarn to come along. Working at my LYS, I ran into just the perfect yarn, “Spud and Chloe“. I never knew of this yarn until I was arranging the yarn on the shelves and realized how lovely it was. I love the easy labeling Spud & Chloe has, they clearly label their yarns “super bulky” with “outer” and “sweater”, easy peasy! I picked up 4 skeins in Gray enough for my Bulky Shrug. Look at this sqooshy-lovely yarn:

Spud & Chloe Outer Super Bulky in Gray

It’s “Outer” Super Bulky, Superwash 65% wool, 35% Organic Cotton, did I mention my LYS is “Green Planet Yarn”? The owner is truly great, and the store is stocked with great organic yarns.

For the few hours I spent working this new Bulky Shrug, this is what I ended up with, it’s turning out great!

I’ll be sporting this baby at work next weekend!

Onto my other endeavors, spoilee endeavors, I purchased 2 skeins of Canopy yarn (sorry no pics), in Acai colorway, a lush red made of 50% baby alpaca, 30% merino, 20% bamboo. I choose to make the “Bella’s Fingerless Gloves” pattern for my spoilee, Svendel, to wear when she goes to see New Moon later this month! I love this, easy knit and fast too!

Another item I made, which is a new love of mine’s, is knitting jewelry. In my 1st Love Bites swap at the beginning of this year, I was given a beautiful knitted bracelet and I fell in love with it. I scoured ravelry for a pattern but nothing. So I improvised my own pattern and voila!

I love these bracelet’s, I have so many ideas for other designs, but this one was easy and fast. Inexpensive and versatile to make, the choices are limitless. This is the bracelet I sent to my spoilee but I have another I made, however I felt that the beads were too large, so I made this one, and I was very happy with the turn out. I’ll post a list of supplies needed to make these as well as the pattern to make later this week.

For now that’s all I’m parting with, there is more but that will come in more posts to come. It’s November, and yes, gift knitting shall start, as well as all other holiday fun! Happy Sunday!

The Aztec

The Aztec is a beanie I designed for my husband, and finally finished. I had actually been formulating a design I had in my head for a long time, but the first prototype ended up being frogged for several reasons.

The first thing I didn’t like when I initially started working the design was the yarn choice. It was originally Black Malabrigo, worsted weight, while I love Malabrigo, it just didn’t have the feel I was going for or the texture I wanted to really capture the pattern. Here’s the first one, the pattern was in the beginning stages, nothing original, nothing fancy, but it just didn’t work.

Che's Beanie

I frogged it and the project hibernated, until about a week ago. My husband had been asking me when I was going to knit his beanie, and I finally got back in the groove with the design. I was a bit discouraged from the first go around, but enough time had past that I could really get into it. I had this vision of cables, but cables that had a look like columns. Columns like that of Greek architecture:

The original pattern was just straight cables, your basic knits & purls. I switched up the stitch count and then let my husband pick a yarn from a few skeins I decided would be good for the pattern. He choose the Cascade Yarns Venezia Worsted yarn in Gray, which is Merino Silk, a blend of 70% Merino Wool and 30% Silk. It is very soft and warm, yet airy at the same time.

Here’s the final piece completed; I’ll be putting together the pattern and publishing it for free on Ravelry if anyone is interested in it. There are so many beanies out there that have cables, but this is a pattern I felt gave me the exact look I was going for.

I went for a “rope” looking brim, and it came out pretty neat. It’s one of the details I was quite happy with as the beanie took shape.

I’m pretty happy with how it turned out, and I’m going to knit another one, this time for my son, who fell in love with it, but prefers black.

I’ll post probably Tuesday with the new pattern and have another new project on the needles that I’m loving!

It’s the “Karma” tank from the Custom Knits book (fabolous book!)….

Oooh, and one last awesome tidbit, Twilight swept the MTV Awards! And the New Moon trailer is great, and a huge tease! I’ve added the trailer to my site, in the “Interesting” section!

What a surprise!

Today I came home for lunch, as I usually do to make me a quick bite to eat, and there was a package waiting for me. I was caught completely off guard as I had swaps going on and no orders I’m waiting for. What did I get?

My Aunt Virgie from Bremington, Washington sent me the best gift, just because 8-) It is my very own “Edward” Apple paperweight! I love it! Something so simple and little yet so wonderful! I, as you know, am a Twilight fan, and this is super. I’ve placed it atop the top shelf of my book case in my office next to all my other Twilight paraphernalia.

Edward Apple Paperweight

I’ll have to call my Auntie tomorrow to give her a HUGE thank you!

In other fibery news, what’s on new on my needles?

The “Aztec” beanie, this is my own design, I’m knitting this for my husband. I’m using Cascade Yarns Venezia Worsted Weight yarn in color #131. This yarn is Merino Silk; the color is an ash gray, perfect for a man. My husband named it “Aztec” because it reminds him of the Aztec calendar. I’ve been meaning to knit him a beanie of his own for awhile now, and I did try with a different yarn, Black Malabrigo yarn, but I just wasn’t getting the right stitch definition from the Malabrigo, so I frogged it.

I started this version the other day, but haven’t made much progress because I need shorter circulars, these are 24′inch, and it’s rather slow knitting because I to constantly adjust the stitches as I knit. I’ll be picking the right length US7’s up tomorrow to finish the “Aztec”. I really like the way the stitch definition is coming out with this yarn. I really can’t wait to get the right needles so I can finish this.

I’ll keep you posted on the progress of this, I hope to finish it this weekend, but I have allot planned that won’t involve knitting 8( We’ll see if I can squeeze in an FO!

Have a good weekend!

The 2 hour handbag

For my Hogwarts swap I was tasked to create a pouch or bag for our Flying class. I’ve been playing catch up since I joined the swap late, so I’ve been fiercely trying to get on top of my homework! I’ve always been a honor student, and there’s no stopping me now 8-)

I improvised this pattern, used chunky yarn, and knitted this pouch up. The entire thing was knitted and crocheted from the same strand of working yarn, not once did I break to continue elsewhere, I figured out the best way to seam it up and add the crocheted embellishments plus the crocheted chained straps. I casted on just before the Superbowl yesterday, and finished up by the end of the game. The only part that wasn’t in the “2 hour” timeframe was the Golden Snitch emblem on the front, which I just crocheted a circle and then added wings, again improvisation on this. I’m just a beginner at crochet, but I can feel my skills gaining speed. I’m most proud of 2 things for this project 1) That I was able to knit & crochet the entire pouch from one working strand of yarn and 2) That I created something out of crochet that turned out so cute.

I don’t have a name for it, and I’ll put a pattern up on Ravelry for free if anyone wants it, just let me know 8-)

And onto other fun news, here are some snapshots of my Swallowtail, yes, still on the Budding Lace, I just need to dedicate more time to it, but it is turning out so pretty.

I need to get busy on this, ooh, and guess who I found snoozing beside my bed…

Oops! I disturbed her sleep! Bad Mommy!

Darn, scared her away!

She has a look like she’s thinking about what to do, and yep, I did scare her away, “Bright Light” as Gizmo says!

More to come tomorrow 8) Happy Monday!

Lady Busta Gloves

I have a new project due for my Hogwarts – A Little Bit of Everything swap, for our Potions class. It’s so cold in the room where we meet that we were given homework. Homework was to knit or crochet a pair of mittens to keep our widdle fingers warm during Potions class, and it’s due today!

I went through 2 or 3 different swatched yarns, over 4 different patterns on Ravelry, and nothing seemed to satisfy me. So, after much procrastinating, I decided to devise a pattern for myself, exactly how I wanted them, and so I started this past Thursday on lunch. I visited Bobbin’s Nest Studio for the first time, it’s actually right around the corner from my job! Easy access is not good for a yarnaholic like me! I wanted to knit some gloves in my houses colors, Gryffindor, but just couldn’t find anything I was happy with. I went with some real pretty green Rowan Felted Tweed in Worsted Weight.

Here’s the first finished glove:

Lady Busta Gloves

When I finished it, I liked it, but it needed something more. I decided to add some Crochet to it, so I did 2 rows of Single Crochet for the rim border of the mittens (around the knuckles), and then added shell stitching to the border of the base of the gloves. Then, I was happy, they turned out nice, and perfect for my Potions class.

I’m calling them “Lady Busta Gloves” because they have a lady’ish flair to them, but also have that bust’em up look to them.

These will be perfect for my Potions class, there small and don’t inhibit the movement of my fingers and allow me to work my wand.

Yarn: Rowan Felted Tweed Worsted Weight, Green
I wouldn’t use this yarn again, not for this project. It is nice, but not pliable, I would use a worsted weight sock yarn instead, and will probably make more soon.
Needles: US8 circulars
Pattern: Lady Busta Gloves (not yet written)
Yardage: Less than 150 yards
Methods: Stockinette, Crochet, Knitting in the round

Homework completed by:
Lady Arabella Carmichael of Gryffindor

Since I’m done with my homework now, I can share my recent splurge of yarn.
It’s been a bit since I’ve bought any real new yarn, I’ve been holding back for months now, believe me it’s been very hard. I had to completely avoid LYS’s, but the ETSY’s do get me now and then.

I’ve also been moving along on my Swallowtail shawl KAL on Ravelry, I don’t have updated pics, but will post some tomorrow. Now I’m off to go get another assignment done and also keep going on my Swallowtail. Talk to you later!
